Motorist in deep trouble

Motorist in deep trouble

A man had to be rescued from a 4×4 which was submerged in water up to its windows on a flooded road near Falkirk.

The driver, who was alone in his Land Rover, became stuck in water at a dip in Station Road, Longcroft, at about 7.45am yesterday.

Around 20 firefighters from Larbert, Stirling and Cumbernauld, and a water rescue team from Stirling, went to the scene after the motorist raised the alarm.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews managed to release the trapped driver and escort him to safety.

The crews had to use a boat to reach him after heavy overnight rain had left the road flooded.

The man was cold but was not hurt and did not need to go to hospital.

Station manager Gordon Griffen said: “This was an excellent example of how professional SFRS personnel with specialist skills are able to respond to emergency requests and assist members of the community.

“Three swift water rescue team members were deployed in the boat and managed to reach the man, who was 60 metres from the roadside, and remove him to safety within five minutes.

“The water level on this road was unusually high after the overnight rain and the road has now been closed on both sides.

“The casualty was a bit cold but otherwise had no injuries.

“The incident has shown the benefit of our water rescue capability. Our team were quickly able to assist the occupant of the car to safety and no lives were lost.”
