Aberdeen Grammar’s Premiership survival prospects are remote, but full back Steve Aitken is convinced his team is capable of pulling off their version of Mission: Impossible.
Grammar are four points adrift at the bottom of the division and have three matches left to secure safety.
With the bottom team facing automatic relegation and second-bottom entering into an end of season play-off with the second-placed team in the National League, Grammar have it all to do.
Kevin Wyness’ side trail ninth-placed Currie by four points and are seven adrift of safety.
But Aitken remains defiant as the must-win finale to the season begins tomorrow.
He said: “League results haven’t gone our way this season but we can honestly say we’ve given every team a game.
“We’ve got three league games left and we are looking to win them all.
“We produced a great performance and result at Edinburgh Accies in the Scottish Cup last weekend to reach the semi-finals and it has given everyone at the club a lift.”
Title-chasing Melrose visit Rubislaw today in what is the Aberdeen club’s final home game of the campaign before they travel to Currie next Saturday in what will be a decisive fixture.
The Rubislaw outfit round off their league season with a trip to Glasgow Hawks on March 22.
Second-placed Melrose’s need to win is as great as their hosts as they trail leaders Gala by three points in what is their penultimate league game.
Having scored 434 points in their 16 matches this season it’s clear where their threat lies and having lost 42-16 at Melrose in October Aitken knows his side must produce when it matters tomorrow.
He said: “It’s our last home game of the season and we have to win it.
“We enjoy the cup competition, but the league is our priority and we’re confident we can stay in the Premiership.
“Melrose have a good reputation for their style of rugby and they are up there challenging for the title, but we believe we can beat them on our own patch and we have to.”
