Grampian Transport Museum is lining-up a bid to bring a restored police car home to the north-east.
The 1985 Rover SD1 Vitesse has been a source of interest to the museum for some time.
Curator Mike Ward inspected it during the filming of the Channel 4 series For The Love of Cars.
Mr Ward said: “The car is worth quite a lot to us as a museum piece, it was the original local ‘jam sandwich’.
“It’s a part of local folklore so we’re particularly keen to secure it.
“We have had the car independently valued by an expert and we’re going to bid to that value.”
The Rover’s previous owner, who is based in London, informed staff at the Alford museum that it was to be auctioned as he felt it belonged in the area.
The 190bhp, 3.5-litre V8 machine was used to catch speeders on the north-east’s busiest roads and is expected to fetch up to £8,000 when it is auctioned at the NEC in Birmingham on Saturday during the Autosport 2015 show.
