A Yes vote in the September referendum is the key to a better deal for women, according to the pro-independence campaign.
Speaking on the eve of International Women’s Day, Yes Scotland board member Sarah-Jane Wallis said independence was an opportunity to reverse decades of failure by Westminster to treat women with equality and fairness.
The mother-of-two, who runs her own fitness company, said: “Punitive childcare costs are hugely debilitating for many families and a barrier to work for many women especially.
“Westminster’s record in this regard is a miserable failure and I certainly have no doubt that, with control of our own affairs and making our own decisions in Scotland, we can do better.
“By taking responsibility for shaping our own future, I know we will do a better job for women in terms of childcare and equality in the workplace.”
Scottish shadow secretary Margaret Curran told Labour activists last night that their party had done more for women than a separate Scottish government could ever achieve.
She highlighted equal pay legislation pushed through by Barbara Castle in the 1970s, the Sex Discrimination Act and extended maternity leave.
She said: “These changes altered women’s lives forever. This is the inconvenient truth that the SNP wants to ignore: that Labour governments inside the UK have achieved more for women than any government in a separate Scotland ever could.”
