Thousands of revellers braved the wintry streets of a Moray village to celebrate a medieval fire festival, where a barrel is set alight to ward off evil spirits for the New Year ahead.
The annual Burning of the Clavie, a 100kg barrel filled with wood and tar and mounted on a large post, dates back to the early medieval period and celebrates the ancient Scots Hogmanay, which used to fall on January 11 before the Gregorian calendar was introduced to Britain in the eighteenth century.
Hoisted through the village of Burghead by the Clavie Crew and its Clavie King, Dan Ralph, the burning blazing barrel drew in hundreds of revelers through the dark wintry night.
Watch the celebrations and feel the warm atmosphere, and burning barrel, heat up the freezing cold January evening.
