Anew holiday experience is being offered through Cottages & Castles, the holiday lettings firm, offering holidaymakers the chance to stay in a waterside home owned by Scottish Canals.
These cottages are next to iconic canals such as the Caledonian Canal, which runs between Inverness and Fort William, and the Crinan Canal, in Argyllshire, where the only traffic-jam is two passing boats.
There are a number of gems to choose from in the range, all of which have been newly refurbished and are luxurious and individual.
Sue Bourne, manager of Cottages & Castles, said: “Each cottage has a beautifully designed interior. Attractive colour and pattern schemes create a modern and cheerful feel in each room and a sense of individuality to each property.
“There is an abundance of outdoor activities on your doorstep at whichever cottage you choose to enjoy.
“Your stay in one of these cottages could happily be spent watching the daily traffic of boats passing through the locks or taking strolls along the scenic canal walks and spotting the local wildlife before retiring in front of a log fire with a good book. A visit to one of these properties would make the ideal family holiday, romantic retreat or corporate outing with a difference.”
Holiday homes, which all sleep four, include:
Tomnahurich Bridge House, located just a mile from Inverness. This lovely old house, which sleeps four, looks down on the Caledonian Canal and all the activity of this beautiful spot.
Sandray Cottage, is a former lock-keeper’s cottage situated on the Caledonian Canal in the Great Glen. Kytra Lock is one of the prettiest of locks, hidden up a hillside track, and is a perfect retreat to explore the Highlands and west coast.
Laggan Bridge Cottage is in Invergarry, where the TV show Monarch of the Glen was filmed.
The 18th-century former canal-workers’ house sits snugly on the mini peninsula where the canal spreads out into Loch Oich. The cottage is surrounded on three sides by water and enjoys beautiful views of the surrounding Highlands.
Telford House East is a striking house that overlooks the Caledonian Canal and has spectacular Ben Nevis as a backdrop. Located near Fort William, it’s a delightful spot to return to after a day’s adventures.
Bannatyne Cottage sits on Lock 11 on the Crinan Canal. The cottage was built originally in the 19th century as a lock-keeper’s cottage and, having been beautifully renovated, today offers a stunning quirky holiday cottage.
