Grantown player Duncan Stewart is looking forward to keeping all the prize money he earns this year after stopping his innovative share scheme.
The 29-year-old took the step of selling shares in himself as he moved up from the third tier Euro Pro Tour to the Challenge Tour.
But after being included in Team Scottish Hydro, a sponsorship scheme aimed at helping Scotland’s most promising golfers, Stewart does not have to worry about funding this year.
Now he can focus fully on taking another step up the professional ladder as he aims to graduate from the Challenge Tour to the European Tour in 2014.
He said: “I have decided to discontinue my shares scheme.
“Over the past two seasons, I have been giving away around 50% of everything I have made on the course but what I win now will be mine, which is great.
“Writing just over 100 cheques at the end of last year, you wonder to yourself: ‘Is this worth it?’
“The reality is I wouldn’t be here without it.”
Aberdeen major winner Paul Lawrie was just one of Stewart’s backers and the Granite City golfer bought shares without asking for a penny in return.
Lawrie continues to provide support on and off the course.
Stewart said: “Paul has been a great support to many young players, myself included.
“Any time you have any questions, you know you can always go to him, which is fantastic.”
