A Highland MP is calling for the Post Office to reconsider proposals to downgrade a Skye post office, which locals believe could result in it closing.
Ross, Skye and Lochaber MP Charles Kennedy is urging the Post Office not to go ahead with its plans to reclassify Dunvegan Post Office as a “Local Post Office”.
He claims the proposal, which follows a review of services in Dunvegan, would mean a decrease of £9,235 per year in payments from Post Office Ltd, which is equivalent to a drop of 25%.
And he said local people feared this move would threaten the sustainability of the purpose-built Post Office and could lead to it no longer being financially viable.
Mr Kennedy pointed out that the proposed downgrade would also result in a reduction in the services to customers in Dunvegan as a Local Post Office would not offer passport, DVLA, currency on demand or any Post Office financial services.
The MP has now written to Post Office managing director, Paula Vennels, calling for it to be reclassified as a Community Post Office, which he claims would save it from potential closure.
Mr Kennedy said: “I have received a significant number of phone calls, emails and letters from constituents and local businesses reiterating their support for Dunvegan Post Office.
“It is essential for the wider local economy with heavy footfall from residents, business and tourists alike.
“The closest alternative is an hour round trip away, for many who find it harder to get about that is simply not a possible alternative.”
A Post Office spokeswoman said: “We are currently reviewing the appeal for community branch status lodged by the postmaster at Dunvegan.
“Post Office Ltd is aware of the value customers place on our service in Dunvegan and we are committed to maintaining it.
“We will announce our decision on a way forward shortly.”
