Aberdeenshire’s famous delicacy, the buttery, is being sold nationwide after a Hatton bakery took part in a supermarket supplier development programme.
Murdoch Allan has seen sales increase 63% since it took part in the Scottish Government-backed Asda Supplier Development Academy last year.
First Minister Alex Salmond, MSP for Aberdeenshire East, hailed the family-owned bakery’s success – particularly with its rowies now being sold across the country.
Mr Salmond, who has been a staunch supporter of the firm since it acquired its Hatton bakery in 2002, said: “Murdoch Allan is a fine family business presenting the best of the north-east right across Scotland. I am pleased that Asda have been able to provide the national stage to showcase the top quality produce this local institution has to offer.
“These sale results wouldn’t be possible without great products, and Murdoch Allan deserve the plaudits on that front. A 63% increase in sales speaks for itself and the calibre of fine pieces they make. I am particularly delighted that the iconic buttery is now available outside of the north-east, and look forward to the day that it gets the world recognition for which all good Aberdeenshire folk know it.” The Hatton factory was established in 1888 by Huntly firm Forbes Simmers and became part of the United Biscuits empire in the 1970s.
It was sold to Murdoch Allan and Sons in 2002.
Last year the bakery signed a £500,000 contract with Asda to supply all 55 of the high street giant’s Scottish stores.
Murdoch Allan had previously provided goods to 11 Asda outlets.
The Allen family was founded by Murdoch and Caroline in 1991 with the acquisition of their first outlet in Fraserburgh. Son Paul, now the company’s managing director, has seen the bakery chain grow to operate six shops with a 140-strong workforce.
The Development Academy is part of an initiative brought forward by Scotland Food and Drink – funded by the Scottish Government.
Suppliers participating in the programme saw an average sales uplift of 41.3%, with a £12.1million boost to sales.
