Coach Kevin Wyness knows tomorrow’s RBS Cup semi-final against Heriot’s at Rubislaw could be his final game in charge of Aberdeen Grammar.
Grammar ended a disappointing Premiership campaign bottom of the table following last weekend’s narrow 20-18 defeat by Glasgow Hawks.
The cup competition presents Aberdeen Grammar with an opportunity to finish the season with a flourish.
And Wyness knows leading his team to a cup final would do no harm to his chances of being the man tasked with steering the team back to the top flight next season.
He said: “This could be my last game depending on the result and what the club want to do in the future.
“I didn’t want to be the coach that gets relegated but there were circumstances behind our season that were there for everyone to see.
“We have had a massive injury list and we didn’t have nearly as many professional players available to us in comparison to other clubs in the league.
“That is not excuse, simply the facts.”
Two players whose time at the club is up are Rob Aloe and Tony McGinness.
Wyness praised the duo for the contribution to the club in recent years.
He said: “It will be Rob’s last game at Rubislaw as he is returning to New Zealand after having been here for a few years.
“Tony McGinness is another who is playing his last game.
“He is going to Auckland for a season of rugby and we wish him all the best.
“He will be flying out before the final so this will definitely be his last game – win or lose.
“He has put his body on the line for several years and has really punched well above his size and weight in the Premiership.
“I fought tooth and nail to get him into the club international side but he wasn’t rated better than the players they had which I thought was unbelievable.
“He has been one of the most consistent and aggressive number sevens in the Premiership for the last number of years. Aberdeen rugby will certainly miss Tony and he and Rob have both been great servants to the club.”
Centre Harry Duthie will miss this weekend’s match because of concussion.
