The first title for the Sutherland club, who joined the Highland League in 1963, was a sweet moment for manager Davie Kirkwood and club sponsor Ben MacKay, who has bankrolled Rangers’ rise to the top of the table.
The pair shared an emotional embrace on the final whistle and Kirkwood said: “It has been a fantastic season and a massive team effort from everyone, the players have thrived under the pressure and take all the credit for it.”
MacKay said: “Perhaps people thought I was foolhardy when I said 18 months ago we would win the Highland League, but now that we’ve won it we’re not going to give it up lightly.”
