PLANS have been unveiled to restore a north-east town centre’s tarnished reputation and win back visitors by giving it a radical revamp.
The long-awaited action plan for Peterhead has been put together by Inverness-based HRI Architects as part of a drive to restore pride in Aberdeenshire’s biggest town.
The company was asked by Aberdeenshire Council to investigate options for the port’s future and breathe new life into its flagging heart.
Today, the Press and Journal can reveal details of the strategy, which involves a major makeover of the Marischal Street, Chapel Street and Broad Street areas.
There is an emphasis on clearing up and re-using abandoned and vacant buildings, as well as installing modern street features.
The plans, which will get an official unveiling next week, aim to lure new businesses into the central shopping zone as well as making it more inviting for young families.
Yesterday, people in the town gave the project a cautious welcome, but said it did not go far enough to address the social issues at the root of the town’s problems.
