Mates who are members of the Unite trade union will down tools on Shetland Islands Council’s ferry service on Wednesday. Industrial action will take the form of mates refusing to ‘act up’ when masters – skippers – are unavailable to pilot vessels. The council has said the action would cause significant disruption to local ferry services, with particular impact on school children and businesses. Regular updates on disrupted services will be available the council’s website and social media.
