A north-east teacher who was jailed for downloading thousands of child porn images could be struck off this week.
Alan Nardoni was sentenced to three-and-a-half years last summer after he was caught with almost 7,000 indecent images and videos of children.
Now the former Portlethen Academy teacher’s fitness to practise will be considered at a General Teaching Council for Scotland hearing on Friday.
The hearing was due to be held last month, but was postponed for further legal discussions.
Nardoni was jailed last August after being convicted of downloading thousands of what a sheriff described as “truly dreadful” images.
Police were alerted to the teacher’s activities in 2006, but took no action.
Nardoni, 36, who also coached the under-14s boys’ football team at Portlethen Academy, continued to amass a huge collection, which included two videos of baby boys being sexually assaulted.
Several of the images were at the most serious end of the scale, and involved children – mostly boys – aged between one and 15.
Inverness Sheriff Court heard Nardoni continued to offend, even though he knew he was under investigation, and downloaded further images after he first appeared in court in January 2012.
Nardoni admitted having at least 1,141 videos and 5,904 images on two laptops, a memory stick and several CDs and DVDs and distributing them between February 18, 2006 and August 7, 2012 at addresses in Aberdeen, Cumbernauld and Kilmarnock.
After he admitted the offences, a spokesman for Aberdeenshire Council said he had been on alternative duties away from the classroom since the allegations came to light.
It was later confirmed that he was no longer employed by the authority.
After the teacher was jailed and put on the sex offenders register, Detective Inspector Richie Guild, who led the investigation, said: “Nardoni was clearly a persistent offender who amassed a vast cache of vile material over more than six years.”
