A pensioner who was pulled out of a north-east harbour after he accidentally rode his mobility scooter off the quayside has died in hospital.
Stuart Farquhar was flown to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by helicopter after the fall at Pennan.
Police confirmed that the 87-year-old had died from his injuries at the weekend. A force spokesman said: “Inquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
The accident happened just before 11am on Friday when the village was busy with tourists.
Mr Farquhar is believed to have driven his scooter to Pennan from his home near Cullykhan Bay.
Locals said he was a regular visitor to the village, which famously featured in the 1983 film Local Hero.
Mr Farquhar, who was on his own at the time, is believed to have fallen into the water while trying to carry out a three-point turn at the edge of the harbour.
He was strapped into the scooter when he fell.
A pair of holiday-makers, who had been staying in the village, ran to his aid and managed to pull him and his scooter to shore.
Mr Farquhar was treated at the scene by an ambulance crew, before being taken to the village entrance where he was transferred to a waiting RAF helicopter.
He was treated at ARI for a serious head injury but died on Saturday morning.
Police closed off part of the harbour, on the east side of the village, for several hours while investigators tried to establish what happened.
Troup councillor Mark Findlater said last night: “This is so sad to hear. My thoughts are with Stuart’s family.
“I know he was a very popular guy and a well-respected member of the community. People who knew him say he was just such a nice chap and very clever.”
It is understood that Mr Farquhar recently suffered a stroke, but had been making a steady recovery.
He had lived at Battlehill of Troup for several years.
