Williams shows utility power

Williams shows utility power

Caley Thistle’s Danny Williams is ready to play in any position if it leads to regular football.

The 26-year-old hopes he has staked a claim for a starting role following his impressive showing at left back in the 1-1 draw with Dundee United at Caledonian Stadium on Saturday.

Williams was excellent in nullifying the threat of United’s young talent in a makeshift back four, but has experience of playing in defence.

He said: “I’ve played wide left and centre midfield this year but I played left back a lot last year for Chester, so it is not a position which is new to me.

“I played most of my games as a wing back last season and I will play anywhere if it means getting a game.

“I like the responsibility of defending and it does allow me to get on the ball more.

“I was an out and out winger and one of my former managers, Lee Ashcroft at Kendall Town, suggested I could have more influence in that position and I do enjoy it.

“I’ve got another two years here and I’m happy to play wherever the manager wants me to.”

The Highlanders failed to build on Ryan Christie’s seventh-minute headed opener and were left to rue not capitalising on their first-half pressure as United equalised through substitute Farid El Alagui.

Third-placed Motherwell’s win against St Johnstone means Inverness cannot qualify for the Europa League next season but Williams is still pleased with what his club has achieved.

He said: “When I came here I said I wanted to improve and I’ve been part of a team which has finished in the top six again and reached a cup final.

“Hopefully, we can kick on next season and if we can produce performances like we did in the first half of this game consistently there’s no reason why we can’t kick on again. We were superb and I thought we passed them off the park in the first half.

“They were better in the second half but we were disappointed not to get the win.”
