Tributes were paid to a veteran Buckie councillor yesterday, as colleagues on Moray’s communities committee gathered for the first time since his death.
Joe Mackay died after being run down by his own mobility scooter last month.
The 86-year-old had been showing his new machine to his daughter Margaret when he accidentally turned the throttle and the vehicle knocked him down.
Mr Mackay’s funeral will be held tomorrow at 1pm in Buckie’s Methodist Church.
His efforts on behalf of the communities committee were praised at the beginning of yesterday’s meeting.
Chairing the discussion, councillor Eric McGillvary said: “Although his valuable contributions to the council and the people of Moray have already been acknowledged, I feel it’s important to mention his work with this committee.
“Mr Mackay was a keen participant in debates and always offered his opinions in his own unique style.
“He was committed to improving services and outcomes for the people of Moray, I think everyone will agree he is sadly missed.”
Moray Council announced last week that it was beginning the by-election process to replace Mr Mackay.
The move was in order to comply with local government law, and went ahead with the blessing of his family.
From today, nomination packs for prospective candidates will be available from the Moray Council headquarters in Elgin.
