A report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal and an investigation is ongoing following the unexplained death of a 20-year-old in Aberdeen’s Union Square shopping centre.
The man, who has not been named, was said to be walking through the mall when the incident occurred.
Despite best efforts of emergency medics he couldn’t be saved.
Ongoing investigation
The Procurator confirmed receipt of a report in connection with this sudden death, which occurred on September 2, 2022.
A spokesperson added: “The investigation into the death, under the direction of Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit (SFIU), is ongoing.
“The family will continue to be kept updated in relation to any significant developments.”
The Scottish Ambulance Service also confirmed its attendance at the scene, adding: “We received a call at 1106 hours to attend an incident in Aberdeen at Union Square. We dispatched one ambulance.”
Death not suspicious
Around 45 minutes after the ambulance was called, Police Scotland were informed.
A spokesman said: “Officers were called to Union Square, Aberdeen, around 11.50am on Friday, September 2, following the sudden death of a 20-year-old man.
“The death is currently being treated as unexplained although there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”
Thoughts with the family
An employee of the upper mall Starbucks in Union Square, said they heard “some kind of accident happened”. However, they believed it occurred at the other end of the shopping centre and were not aware that the person involved had died.
Union Square’s management also expressed its condolences following the young man’s death within its premises.
“Our thoughts are with their friends and family at this very difficult time.
“We can confirm that an incident occurred here (Union Square) and despite the best efforts of the emergency services the visitor sadly passed away.
“We are continuing to assist them with their enquiries.”
- Both Police Scotland and Union Square confirmed the 20-year-old’s death should not be confused with a medical emergency involving an elderly man on the afternoon of Saturday, September 3. There had been some speculation online confusing the two situations, however, while the latter was distressing to witness and blood was seen on the floor, the older man made a full recovery.
