A dead dog has been found stuffed inside a suitcase and dumped on a city street.
The body of a “very underweight” German shepherd was left out beside communal bins in Aberdeen’s Torry area.
The Scottish SPCA appealed for any information that could help them find out who disposed of the tragic animal’s body like a piece of “rubbish”.
The grim discovery was made by a member of the public last Wednesday, who alerted Scotland’s animal welfare charity.
The 11-year-old dog, who was female, had been wearing a collar but it had no identification tag.
Scottish SPCA chief inspector John Carle: “This poor dog appeared to be very underweight and it looks as though someone has just dumped her like rubbish.
“A vet report concluded that she was in very poor body condition, although we have been unable to establish the cause of death. Our inquiries are ongoing and we are keen to speak to anyone who recognises the description of the dog and can tell us who owned her, or anyone who spotted someone carrying a suitcase in the area.”
Local councillor Alan Donnelly said he was disgusted someone could treat an animal in such an “inhumane” way. “In this day and age, there is absolutely no need to dump any pet on the street like this. I am horrified,” he said.
“This must have been so traumatic for the poor person who discovered the body. You wouldn’t need to be an animal lover to be affected by this.
“If you aren’t coping with an animal, there are people out there who can help. This situation need never have happened.
“Whoever has done this obviously needs help themselves and need to be held accountable. Someone out there will notice that a German shepherd is missing from the area, and I would urge them to come forward with information that could help,” added Mr Donnelly. Anyone with information relating to the dog should contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
