Residents of a Speyside village are decrying the “wanton vandalism” that laid waste to a public beauty spot.
A pair of regularly used gazebos in Garmouth public park were destroyed between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, and repair work could cost around £500.
The Garmouth and Kingston Amenities Association’s James Mackie said last night: “Three side panels in one gazebo and four in the other have been kicked out.
“Such was the force used, some of the support legs were moved.
“Some of the panels in our gazebo up beside the bowling green were smashed up and pieces of the wood panels were scattered around the area.
“It’s just pure, wanton vandalism.”
The association purchased the gazebos three years ago with its own funds.
Mr Mackie added: “The park is very well used, particularly in the summer, and people have enjoyed eating picnics in the gazebos.
“It was very disheartening when I found them damaged.
“People from the village, including a number of children, spent days helping to put them up.”
The structures were not insured, and if they are to be replaced it will be at the expense of the Garmouth and Kingston group.
Mr Mackie and other members of the association will examine the possibility of rebuilding the gazebos this week.
Members are appealing for help in the repair work, and volunteers can contact the group’s secretary David Mackay on 01343 870233.
Any witnesses who may have seen the damage are asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
