A seaman from the Western Isles has died following an incident in Thailand, it has emerged.
Police said that Iain Mackay, who worked with a seismic research company, bled to death after cutting himself on a smashed mirror.
However, the exact circumstances of the tragedy are still under investigation.
But friends claimed 40-year-old Mr Mackay had earlier clashed with a girlfriend and another man at a bar in Hua Hin win Prachuap Khiri Khan Province on the Malay Peninsula.
Police in Hua Hin said last night that Mr Mackay had died in hospital after the shop mirror incident and confirmed no crime had been committed.
A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We can confirm the death of a British National in Hua Hin, Thailand, on April 3.”
He added: “We are providing consular assistance to the family at this sad time.”
Mr Mackay’s parents, Uilleam and Chrissie Mackay, live at Perceval Road in Stornoway on the isle of Lewis.
Relatives did not want to comment on the tragedy last night, and there was
no one available at Mr Mackay’s employer’s offices in Dubai.
