Police in Moray are launching a new initiative to crackdown on drivers flouting the law.
Officers are urging residents in Buckie and Keith to report any antisocial driving, along with as much detail about the culprits as possible.
As part of a ‘fair warning’ scheme police will keep a record of cars that have been reported by members of the public, so they can target repeat offenders.
Patrols will also be stepped up in the town.
Inspector Alan Armit said: “We’ve been receiving complaints from residents about drivers in Buckie and Keith town centres and, with some cars having modified exhausts, the noise involved can cause great distress to locals.
“We’re aware that drivers often moderate their driving when they see a marked police vehicle but will revert to antisocial driving once police leave.
“Following residents phoning in with details, a letter will be sent to the owner of the vehicle advising them that a report of antisocial driving has been received.
“The letter will detail the consequences of such driving and inform them that they risk being reported to the procurator fiscal and potentially having their car seized.
“When officers next stop a vehicle for excessive noise or similar, they can check whether the driver has already been warned.”
