A Lewis man was understood to be seriously injured last night after he fell from a two-storey building in Stornoway town-centre.
The casualty – believed to be local and in his 20s – landed on the road in Church Street following the accident which happened around 7pm.
An ambulance and a paramedic fast response vehicle rushed to the scene just yards away from Stornoway police station.
It is understood the man was living in a flat on the corner of Kenneth Street and Church Street.
It is unclear if he toppled from a rooftop or fell out of an upper window.
Paramedics treated him at the accident scene for up to an hour before taking him to the Western Isles Hospital a mile away.
One passerby said a huddle of people were in tears and hugging one another as the ambulance drove off.
Another observer said: “I saw one guy in tears running down Church Street. He ran into ambulance where the injured man was being treated. Ambulance staff put him out but he went back in again. Then they got him out again.”
Detectives were questioning other residents in the property as well as people renting rooms in a neighbouring flat.
Police cordoned off the bottom part of Church Street and officers were standing guard last night.
