An RAF policeman who survived cancer will take to the football pitch next week for a fundraising match between rival military sides.
Corporal Peter Swierczek will play for RAF Lossiemouth’s police team when they take on their counterparts in the Military Police Guard Service on Thursday at Elgin City FC’s Borough Briggs ground.
All funds from the event, which is open to the public, will go to Cancer Research UK.
Cpl Swierczek, 39, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2012, and was given the all-clear the following year after intensive treatment.
He said: “It was this time two years ago that I finished treatment, and I’m grateful to Cancer Research UK for all they have done to help fight the disease.
“Testicular cancer can hit people at any age, but the research that’s gone on means it’s no longer a death sentence.
Cpl Swierczek, who has served in Afghanistan during his military career, added: “When I was undergoing chemotherapy my RAF colleagues were a massive support to me, they would drive me to and from hospital when I was unable to and provided great moral backup.”
Corporal Bobby McDowall said the game was part of a friendly series of sporting challenges between the opposing factions.
He said: “We were going to have the game anyway, but I suggested we involve a charitable element.
“Our first event was a golf match, where the MPGS trounced us, so we will be looking for a bit of revenge on the football field.
“I think it goes without saying that almost everyone knows someone affected by cancer at some point in their life.”
Thursday’s game will kick off at 2pm.
