Children from a Moray primary school will travel to Scotland’s capital to pit their wits against the nation’s brightest young minds in a quiz about Europe.
Primary six pupils at St Sylvester’s RC school in Elgin will compete in a national EuroQuiz event in the debating chamber of the Scottish Parliament building on Monday.
They will be up against 29 other schools from across country.
And since winning a qualifying competition against five local schools in March, pupils Megan Lockey, Katie Gilmour, AJ Cabrera and Callum Kirkpatrick have been studying hard on all things European.
Eleven-year-old team captain AJ said: “We’ve been learning about everything from different treaties, to capital cities and when each member country joined the European Union.
“I wouldn’t say we are experts on Europe, but we’re very keen amateurs.”
Teammate Katie, 10, added: “I’ve enjoyed practising and we’ve learned a lot about Europe.
“We’re looking forward to our trip, as myself and a few others have never been to Holyrood before.”
The children will travel to Edinburgh on Sunday, and are planning a spot of sightseeing prior to Monday afternoon’s quiz – which will be broadcast on the internet.
Head teacher Christine Jackson added: “The children are very excited about it and the school is very proud of what they have achieved already.”
The contest is organised by the Scottish European Education Trust.
Its treasurer James Ivory was impressed with the general knowledge of Moray’s youngsters when he attended the qualifying event in March.
He said: “The enthusiasm and the knowledge of these kids is absolutely great – what they know is astounding.”
