Moray’s turnout has been revealed as 68.8%, and though the area’s SNP group opted not to comment on the result the widely held belief is that the lion’s share of those votes went to Angus Robertson.
Earliest indications were that the SNP were set to regain the seat, but as verification of Thursday’s vote began a source close to the campaign chose only to comment on the high turnout.
He said: “The SNP have welcomed the increased turnout, and it’s a positive sign for democracy that the Moray turnout is a good bit up on the last Westminster election.
“It reflects the positive engagement that SNP activists experienced at polling stations throughout the day.”
It was also revealed that 85% of Moray’s postal votes had been returned, bringing the total number of voters to 49,321 from an electorate of 71,685.
In 2010 62.3% of those eligible voted in the general election.
