Some Moray secondary schools could be rezoned for the first time in more than 40 years, after “long overdue” plans were approved yesterday.
Moray Council’s children and young people’s services committee took action after being told catchment areas for some of the area’s high schools were last evaluated in the 1970s.
Introducing a report on the matter, the local authority’s head of lifelong learning, culture and sport Graham Jarvis said: “We have an urgent need to look at the zoning of our secondary schools, as the pressure on the area’s rolls is increasing.
“This research really is long overdue.”
Elgin City South councillor John Divers said recent consultations on the zoning of Elgin’s primary school catchment areas had made it “quite obvious” that the same work was needed at all of the region’s secondary schools.
Members agreed to move forward with draft rezoning proposals, which will go out to public consultation at a later date.
A report said redrawing catchment areas for secondary schools so they fitted more cohesively with primaries could bring “significant benefits for pupils”.
The zone for Elgin High School was established in June 1977 by the former Grampian Regional Council education committee, while the zone for Lossiemouth High School was established at the start of the 1972/73 session.
