Strong winds and rain to batter north and north-east

A severe weather warning has been issued for the north and north-east as winds as strong as 60mph are expected to hit Scotland.

Met Office placed a yellow “be aware” warning for much of Scotland as gales and rain stretch from across the Atlantic and into the UK.

The bad spell of weather is thought to continue until tomorrow evening with forecasters saying travel is likely to be disrupted.

The news comes just days after bookies slashed the odds on Britain enjoying the hottest June on record as forecasters say a heatwave will send temperatures soaring.

Although Aberdeen is off to a sunny start today, showers are anticipated to fall later in the afternoon and continue into tomorrow with Peterhead and Fraserburgh to experience the same.

In the Highlands, the week is off to a cloudy start and will follow the forecast of the north-east.
