Plans for a new £13million school for the Stoneywood area of Aberdeen have moved a step closer to reality.
A replacement will be built for the primary in the grounds of Bankhead Academy, which was demolished after a huge fire in 2012.
The new school is required after the existing one received one of the lowest ratings in the city for the condition of its buildings.
Yesterday, members of the education and children’s services committee agreed to progress with the plans, after hearing that the majority of consultation respondents were in favour of both the new school and the site.
The new development is due for completion by August 2017.
Funding for the project has already been allocated by Aberdeen City Council’s five-year capital programme.
The new school on the five-acre Bankhead site is understood to have space for a total of 434 pupils, as well as extra room for nursery pupils.
As part of the project, land north of the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road, currently in the catchment area of Brimmond School, will be re-zoned to the new school from August.
Councillor Angela Taylor, convener of the education and children’s services committee, said: “We are very pleased to see this project moving forward.
“It is one of several new schools that are being built as part of our capital programme, in addition to a new academy for the south of the city.”
