Investigations are ongoing into the death of a kitten which was apparently bludgeoned to death in an Inverness street.
Police yesterday confirmed that officers were continuing to look into the death of eight-month-old Wesley who was found dead in the Merkinch area of the city at the weekend.
A spokesman for the force said he did not have further details, adding: “Inquiries are ongoing and we would urge any witnesses to come forward.”
Police previously said they found “a metal implement” near where the cat’s body was found.
The Scottish SPCA are also investigating the incident and will hold a post mortem to establish the cause of death.
The fluffy blue and grey pet was found in a lane outside the block of flats on Benula Road where it had lived with owners Lorna Henderson, 32, and 11-year-old Bethany MacLennan.
Miss MacLennan had spent the day searching for her pet after it failed to return home the previous night.
Miss Henderson branded the killers “disgusting”.
The 32-year-old mum said: “The cat was my daughter’s best pal. These people are absolutely disgusting, they are not human.
“I just can’t see the point of getting a kick out of killing a beautiful family pet.”
Wesley’s body was discovered after it Miss Henderson was told of posts on a social media site mentioning a dead cat near where she lives.
Miss Henderson said: “When I realised what had happened I did not know what to do. I was outside in my dressing gown and there was a pool of blood on the walkway. I knew it was my cat because he’s the only one like that round here.”
Scottish SPCA senior inspector Andy Brown said: “At this stage we do not know the cause of death and we are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination, which will hopefully determine how this poor cat died.”
Anyone with information about the incident should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
