Jewellery owned by the lady of one of Aberdeenshire’s most famous mansions has sold for more than £17,500.
Seven items owned by the late Lady Aberdeen, of Haddo House, went under the hammer yesterday.
The collection included an “exquisite” pendant given to Lady Aberdeen’s family by the Queen of Spain, which fetched £2,750.
The ruby, pearl and enamel cross was originally given to Lady Aberdeen’s aunt, Dorothy, by the Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain on her wedding day in 1909.
The highlight of Lyon and Turnbull’s auction however, was an Edwardian diamond and amethyst fringe necklace given to Lady Aberdeen on her own wedding day in 1939.
Lady Dudley Gordon presented her with the stunning piece before she married David, the 4th Marquess of Aberdeen and Templair.
Yesterday, it sold for £10,000 – with people from across the globe bidding.
The items from the collection that were sold fetched a combined total of £17,538.
Ruth Davis, jewellery specialist at the auctioneers, said: “We had a lot of interest in the sale from across the globe with many people bidding on the telephone and internet from Europe, the USA and of course the UK.”
Lady Aberdeen – born Beatrice Mary June Boissier, and known as June Gordon – was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria’s honorary chaplain.
A professional musician, she became the patron of Aberdeen International Youth Festival and a founder and musical director of Haddo House Choral and Operatic Society.
She was made an MBE in 1971 and a CBE in 1989.
Lady Aberdeen died in June 2009, aged 95.
