A new wildlife viewing hide has been opened on Skye, allowing visitors to watch sea eagles, otters and other birds.
The project at Kylerhea overlooked the narrows between the island and the mainland.
RSPB President Miranda Krestovnikoff recently joined members of the local community and staff and volunteers from Forestry Commission Scotland and RSPB Scotland to celebrate the new feature.
Ms Krestovnikoff, who succeeded Kate Humble as RSPB president in 2013, said: “This outstanding wildlife viewing experience has been made possible due to a partnership between RSPB and Forestry Commission Scotland. Kylerhea is one of the best places to see sea eagles fishing in the wild. It is also a fantastic place to see other wildlife such as otters with their young, seals, golden eagles and dolphins – although, of course, Victor the regularly visiting sea eagle is acknowledged as the star of the show.
“On behalf of RSPB Scotland I would like to thank the Forestry Commission for all their work in helping to make this project happen and, in particular, to thank Rhuraidh, Callum and Neil from FCS who have designed and built the viewing shelter.”
Graeme Prest, FCS forest district manager, said: “This project has been embraced by the local community and I am very pleased that Andy and Jake, both members of the local community, are on site to greet visitors to Kylerhea. Their knowledge and enthusiasm is infectious. I hope that the project will help to attract more and more people to this beautiful part of Skye and, of course, to take advantage of the unique opportunity to cross the narrows by means of the Kylerhea ferry which has been very supportive of the project too.”
