A Stornoway supermarket was evacuated after a fire alert today.
Employees at the Macaulay Road Co-op store said they heard “loud bangs” before managers told them to leave the building.
It is understood that a fuse box – connected to the shop’s internal electricity supply – blew up.
Two fire crews from the nearby Stornoway fire station attended the incident around 3.30pm.
Customers were ushered outside and staff told to leave their posts.
The store was still closed to shoppers last night though workers were allowed back.
Electricians from construction firm Lewis Builders were working on repairs.
Hundreds of customers were turned away from the supermarket which lost out on a busy trading day.
The incident created a boost for the rival Tesco store on the other side of town as islanders flocked to stock up on barbecue foods, juice and ice cream in anticipation of today’s heat wave.
A fire service spokeswoman said two fire engines attended the incident.
The Scottish Co-op was unable to comment this evening.
