The Blitz spirit was in ample supply at an RAF raft race yesterday afternoon which this year carried a Battle of Britain theme.
A crowd of roughly 3,000 took advantage of the good weather to watch teams battle to rule the waves down by Lossiemouth’s East Beach.
But as teams dealt with waterlogged vessels and broken rafts, only five out of 19 teams managed to complete the challenging aquatic course.
This year’s winning squad was made up of staff from RAF Lossiemouth’s police dog section, who knocked last year’s victors The Steamboat Inn into third place.
The winning raft was constructed from oil drums held together by white paint and was designed to resemble a viking longboat.
In fourth place was the Spitfire Sirens team, who fully embraced the call by organisers to pay tribute to the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
The all-female side, who were dressed in retro military regalia, were later awarded the best fancy dress prize.
Flight Lieutenant Ollie Harbridge was the officer in charge of the raft race committee at the Lossie station.
Mr Harbridge said: “The raft race was a great success again this year.
“I’m obviously happy that an RAF Lossiemouth team won, and I think the friendly competition helped to make this year’s event the most enjoyable yet.
“I’d like to thank the local businesses and residents of Lossiemouth for their continued support.”
The event is staged each year by the airbase, Moray Council and police in Moray.
