A 47-year-old Glasgow chef was caught trying to smuggle almost £100,000 of cannabis into the Western Isles.
Andrew Kenny was about to board the Ullapool ferry to Stornoway last August when police intervened.
In his holdall was cannabis with a maximum value of £93,590, Inverness Sheriff Court was told yesterday.
Defence lawyer Pauline Chapman told Sheriff Margaret Neilson that Kenny had been running his own business from a rented kitchen in a pub.
She added: “The business foundered and he found himself in dire financial circumstances. He was contacted by people who knew of his circumstances through talk in the pub and he was asked to travel to Stornoway.
“He saw this as an opportunity to ease his financial situation and he succumbed to temptation.
“He tried to justify his actions in his own mind because cannabis is not the most dangerous of drugs. He did not stand to benefit from the selling of the drugs. He is ashamed of himself for agreeing to carry out that delivery.”
Sheriff Margaret Neilson deferred sentence until August 20 for more information from Kenny’s Glasgow lawyers who have been requested to be present on that date.
