But the main road through Finstown, one of Orkney’s busiest routes, has been closed while fire crews tackle the blaze. Firefighters were called to the house on the town’s Main Street at 1.44pm. Three crews remain at the scene. The A965 Kirkwall to Stromness road passing the house is closed, with motorists advised to take an alternative route. A spokeswoman for the fire service said that the fire was “well developed”. The roof has collapsed as a result of the fire.
