Members of RAF Lossiemouth’s pipe band have been kilted out in new tartan finery celebrating the air force.
The Moray airbase’s pipers and drummers have worn Ancient Sutherland tartan since 1957, and over the last five decades the green, blue and red plaid design has become a familiar sight during parades across Moray.
But now the pipe band has welcomed a change of outfit – which will bring the group’s colours into line with RAF piping groups in other parts of Scotland.
The uniform change to blue RAF tartan means that members’ attire now matches that of pipe bands belonging to stations at Halton, Waddington and Central Scotland, formerly Leuchars.
However, each of the bands will remain uniquely distinctive by wearing their own band ties.
Pipe Major Barry Ashby said: “Everyone will have seen the band performing on parades and at fundraisers, socials and ceremonial occasions wearing the Ancient Sutherland tartan.
“Hopefully everyone will soon recognise us in our new tartan as we continue to provide musical support to the station and to public events.”
The RAF Lossiemouth Pipes and Drums section was formerly RAF Kinloss Pipes and Drums, and moved to Lossiemouth when the Kinloss camp was handed over to the army.
This year the band performed at the officers’ mess Burn’s Supper, a 100th anniversary parade of the XV (R) Fighter Squadron and an Armed Forces Day Parade in Keith.
Members also represented RAF Lossiemouth in the massed bands parade at the Highland Military Tattoo at Fort George, Inverness.
