A wintry blast swept across the north-east yesterday bringing blizzards and treacherous driving conditions.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning for snow and ice across the region which remains in place until 10am today.

Parts of inland Aberdeenshire saw prolonged, heavy snowfall yesterday, with around 6ins falling in Braemar.

A number of roads were hit with the A90, north of Dundee brought to a standstill in the afternoon.

The A93 Ballater to Perth road at Glenshee was closed due to snow whilst there was a warning out for the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road between Keith and Newtack.

The B974 Cairn O’ Mount road was closed due to drifting show at shortly before midnight on Saturday but reopened at 9.30am yesterday.

Aberdeen got a dusting at around 5pm although forecasters said it would remain largely dry in the city overnight.

Met Office forecaster Ian Robinson said: “We have a band of snow coming across the country just now and it has been quite heavy in places.

“But overnight I think the showers will become increasingly confined to the Moray Firth coast, the western Cairngorms and western parts of Aberdeenshire.

“Deeside has had some more persistent showers as have Angus, Perthshire and Tayside.

“There may be some snow lying around in the morning but we are not expecting anything too major.

“Low lying areas will possibly have a dusting of snow but I would have thought it would just be a covering at most.

“Up in the hills, there may be a bit more.

“We are faring better than the rest of the country.”

Mr Robinson said today would bring occasional wintry showers and strong westerly winds.

He added: “For the bulk of the region it will be a fairly decent day with a good bit of sunshine

“Monday night into Tuesday will be a very cold night with temperatures going down to about -5C.”

Then a band of rain will move across the region from the south-west bringing a wet and windy day but with far milder conditions and temperatures of around 8C.

Wednesday will remain fairly cloudy with bright spells and rain with temperatures of around 11 or 12C.

On Thursday, there will be showers and some decent spells of sunshine with temperatures of around 6 or 7C.
