The tales of Christmas past will take over Elgin this weekend as residents are guided on a trip through time to find out how their forefathers celebrated the festive season.

Final preparations are underway for the town’s Very Victorian Christmas event, which takes place at the Plainstones on Saturday.

Throughout the day, visitors to the town centre will explore the customs that characterised the yuletide period throughout the 19th century.

Free events will also include traditional Victorian games like playing with iron hoops.

The streets will be packed with colourful costumed characters from the town’s history, such as a ferret tamer, a town crier, and a crew of “mischievous rogues”.

There will also be a special Victorian Santa Claus.

Meanwhile at St Giles Church, a choir will perform traditional carols, and there will be the chance to make Victorian-style Christmas crackers and tree decorations.

The event is being staged by the team behind Elgin’s Castle to Cathedral to Cashmere historical trail project, in conjunction with the Lantern of the North music group.

Organisers hope it will shed some festive light on the town’s past while giving local musicians a chance to showcase their talents.

Chairman of the Castle to Cathedral to Cashmere project, Jim Royan, said: “We want to bring some of the magic of Christmas past to Elgin town centre, and are delighted to partner up with the Lantern of the North to hold a wonderful programme of events.”

Mark Conti, managing director of Lantern of the North, said the day would provide a “feast for the senses”.

“There will be the smell and image of traditionally roasted chestnuts, and the sounds of our own musicians performing their interpretations of authentic entertainment,” he said.

“There is going to be a real buzz around the centre.”

Activities will run from 11am to 4pm.

A local musician who owns a motorcycle shop is even offering the chance to win a brand new moped – worth £1,200 – to support the big day.

Simon Watterson has been selling raffle tickets for the WK Bellissima 50 at North East Motorcycles, and the winner will be revealed on Saturday.
