Residents in one of Moray’s most picturesque ports have launched a drive to secure the village its own Hogmanay celebration.
Inspired by efforts elsewhere, Cullen and Deskford Community Council will spend the year shaping plans to see 2016 out with a bang.
Members say the idea is at a very early stage, and have encouraged locals to make their voices heard as to what they would like the celebration to involve.
Secretary of the community group, Carol Wood, said that if the proposals came to fruition the bash could be a “really fantastic” way to bring visitors into the village.
Ms Wood said: “This is something the community council has been thinking about for a while, and it will be discussed at our next meeting.
“At this stage we’re not sure what form the celebration would take – it might be a street party but could be something completely different.
“It could potentially be really fantastic to do something like this, people from other coastal villages near us could all gather here for it as well as residents from further afield.
“We want it to be a real community event, involving local businesses and Cullen’s younger and older people.”
Ms Wood added that the group had funds which could help cover the cost of the event and said fundraisers could be held throughout the year to generate more cash.
Cullen dance instructor Jennifer Welsh has already said that, should timing allow, her pupils would be keen to perform at a ceremony to mark the arrival of 2017.
Community council members will discuss the plans at their next meeting, on Tuesday, January 26, at Cullen Community Centre.
The group is keen for members of the public to attend and offer ideas and assistance which could help make its ambitions a reality.
