The organisers of a new charity fitness event in Moray are encouraging residents young and old to take part.

Forres’s Grant Park will host a Sport Relief Mile this spring, offering participants the chance to raise cash by either trekking one, three or six miles along a course.

The event is being hosted by the Forres Area Soccer 7s children’s football group.

Club chairman Shaun Moat said: “We are calling this the Forres Mile, but there are options available to walk or run three or six miles too.

“Having that variety should mean more people are able to take part – they can run or walk the course and do whatever they want to do.

“The route will be wheelchair friendly and suitable for pushchairs as well as for older family members.”

The Forres Harriers running club’s Doug Cowie and Paul Rogan are carefully plotting out a course which will be suitable for a range of ages and abilities.

It will be the first and only Sport Relief Mile fundraiser in Moray, with the nearest events previously taking place in Aberdeen.

Last year, the Sainsbury’s sponsored event sent out an appeal for a Moray group to help organise a fun run in the area.

Mr Moat said his football group seized upon the chance to help out.

“We just thought it was a good opportunity to get involved and to help the area”, he said.

“We are all about helping children get into sport and fitness, and this is helping to achieve that.”

The event will take place on Sunday, March 20, and entrants can register online at www.sportrelief.com
