Aspiring engineers at a Moray high school have received an insight into the technological feat it takes to protect the UK’s airspace.
RAF Lossiemouth personnel welcomed 13 youngsters from Elgin High School onto the site – who said they were “fascinated” by the powerful aircraft present.
The pupils, aged between 12 and 14, visited the 1 (Fighter) Squadron to learn about the engineering requirements of the airfield’s Typhoon FGR4 jets.
The pupils have all chosen to study science during their second year at school.
They will be mentored by RAF Lossiemouth sergeant Stuart Rolf, as part of a programme to encourage children to study science, technology, engineering and maths.
Over the next 10 weeks, Sgt Rolfe will visit the secondary school, and it is expected they will return to the base for a second visit.
Elgin High School’s headteacher, Andrew Simpson, said the local airfield provided the perfect platform to highlight possible careers in engineering.
“The pupils found the visit fascinating – it was great for them to understand how the theory they learn about in class applies in real life,” he said.
“RAF Lossiemouth is a big part of the community in Elgin and in Moray, and we are delighted to be able to work with the base.”
The students will be tasked with completing an engineering project as part of a challenge called Go4Set, run by the Engineering Development Trust.
Squadron Leader Owen Hannan, Officer Commanding of the Mechanical Engineering Squadron, is leading the programme.
He added: “RAF Lossiemouth is part of a network of ambassadors and teachers across the region promoting these subjects.
“We work closely with Moray Council and local schools to encourage children to explore the opportunities these subjects can provide.
“Our ability to provide Typhoons to protect the UK skies is founded on our personnel’s skills as engineers and technicians.
“So bringing the team from Elgin High School to RAF Lossiemouth will let them see an exciting engineering environment.”
Elgin High School received £20,000 from the Ministry of Defence last month to help fund the project.
