Four people remain in hospital after a two-car smash in Moray.
A 29-year-old German tourist was airlifted to hospital on Wednesday after the head-on crash, which happened on the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road just outside Lhanbryde.
The 23-year-old female he was travelling with, along with the two occupants of the other car, who are both also in their 20s, were also taken to hospital by ambulance.
Last night, police confirmed the four people were receiving treatment at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Immediately following the accident, the German man was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness amid fears his injuries could prove fatal.
The three others were taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin to have their wounds tended to.
But at around 11pm on Wednesday night, a coastguard helicopter from Lossiemouth transported a female casualty to Aberdeen. The other patients were later transferred to ARI.
Police last night appealed for witnesses who could help them piece together what happened to come forward.
The accident happened at the Threaplands junction, and involved a white Opel Corsa – being driven by the tourists – and a red Vauxhall Corsa, which contained a 24-year-old man and 25-year-old woman.
Sergeant Colin Manson urged any member of the public who had information on the crash to contact the police.
He said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw either of the vehicles prior to the crash, to get in touch with us.”
The A96 remained closed in both directions until the early hours of yesterday morning as police crash scene investigators worked to determine the cause of the smash.
Fire crews from Elgin and Lhanbryde attended the scene and had to use tools to free the trapped commuters from their mangled vehicles.
Anyone who has any information on the accident should call 101.
