A professional photographer trying to capture one of the most iconic sights on Skye – featured in Hollywood blockbusters – ended up having to be saved by a mountain rescue team.
The man had gone up to the Storr on the Trottenish Ridge at 5am to snap the famous landscape at sunrise.
But he veered off the path about 300 feet up and became frightened – deciding to raise the alarm by mobile phone.
He ended up stuck on a crag, after struggling with the rocky terrain.
The alarm was raised at around 8.30am on Wednesday, and seven members of the Skye Mountain Rescue Team went to his aid.
The Italian photographer was eventually hauled 40 feet up – with the aid of ropes – from the crag, and escorted on foot back to the roadside.
Skye MRT leader Gerry Akroyd said:”He had all the gear – tripods, everything. He had gone up at 5am to get good pictures but the path was covered in snow and he lost his way off it.
“He just got a bit of a fright and got crag fast. He realised he could not get down so he phoned for help.
“He did not even get the pictures he was after. He was apologetic and a bit embarrassed.”
The Storr has regularly featured in Hollywood films like Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and recent blockbuster Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, as well as television programmes, commercials, newspapers and magazines.
The Old Man of Storr and Trotternish Ridge are among Skye’s most recognisable landscapes.
The ‘Old Man’ is a large pinnacle of rock that stands high and can be seen for miles around. As part of the Trotternish ridge the Storr was created by a massive ancient landside, leaving one of the most photographed landscapes in the world.
