Firefighters called to farmhouse blaze

Four fire engines were called to a blaze at a derelict farmhouse building last night, with flames bursting through the roof.

Hose jet reels and breathing apparatus were used by firecrews to tackle the flames at the building in Mains of Loriston in Cove.

The large fire was spotted could be seen from nearby homes and smoke was billowing onto nearby streets.

Police were also at the taped-off scene and blocked off one lane of traffic for motorists while firemen doused the flames.

Two fire engines from Aberdeen Central and two from Altens were called into action at about 8pm and several members of the crews were climbing ladders under torchlight to knock away slates from the roof of the building.

Station manager Ben Law said the blaze was “well under control” by 10.20pm.

“It is a derelict building and it has been for a wee while,” he said.

“Access was gained by ladders.

“We were removing slates and roof timbers to get access to where it was burning,”

There was “extensive fire damage” to the first floor of the property, he said but there were no injuries as a result of the fire.

“There is no indication at the moment what caused it,” Mr Law said.

He believed the fire was well established when fire crews arrived.

Firemen were still dousing down the property at 10.30pm.

“We will probably be here another hour,” said Mr Law.
