An Aberdeenshire theatre group has gained a funding boost after a £2,000 award from Asda.
Deeside Youth Musical Theatre is celebrating after receiving the funding as part of the latest round of grant giveaways from the Scottish 5p carrier bag charge.
The theatre group is a non-profit-making group, run by a parent-led committee. The ensemble decided to use their funding to employ professional musicians for their annual show Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Chair at Deeside Youth Musical Theatre, Julie Thomson, said: “We were very excited to learn we would be receiving the £2,000 grant from the Asda Carrier Bag fund.
“This has been a huge boost for the group – the cast have really enjoyed rehearsing and performing with professional musicians and the production provided fantastic entertainment for over 700 people during a three-day run at Deeside Community Theatre.”
In partnership with Foundation Scotland, Asda is distributing half of the proceeds of the Scottish Government’s bag charge though carrier bag community grants.
This helped to provide up to £2,000 for local projects.
Community champion at the retailers’ Bridge of Dee store, Shonagh Hepburn, said: “We want the carrier bag charge to have long-term social and environmental benefits, and we want to ensure the funds raised are spent locally.
“By working with Foundation Scotland, we have ensured that the bag charge benefits small projects and good causes that matter most to our local community.
“It’s fantastic to see the positive impact it’s making in Aberdeen.”
