A Moray drama school is preparing to launch its own degree programme following a successful stage show about Scotland’s most famous poet.
The Lossiemouth-based Rock Academy group has brought Robert Burns: The Musical to audiences all across Scotland since it debuted early last year.
The production was the brainchild of American music luminary Michael Jackson and his friend, David Gest – and was written and directed by Rock Academy co-owner Tish Tindall.
Ms Tindall said that its popularity had brought the arts academy a string of benefits.
She added: “The Robert Burns show has become a spearhead for us and has allowed Rock Academy to grow so much.
“I’ve recently spoken with Scottish education bodies and suggested we create a unique degree course for the performing arts, which encompasses what we are doing in Lossiemouth at HND level.
“This will allow students to train here as part of a degree programme, and the Scottish Qualifications Authority seems happy about it.”
Ms Tindall expressed her hopes that the scheme could ultimately help budding stars from across the north find work in leading West End productions.
She has been forging links with London-based casting directors and agents, so she can offer students opportunities which could lead to a career in show business.
The seasoned drama teacher recently taught classes in Dubai, and aims to arrange student exchanges with a performing arts school in the UAE.
Ms Tindall will also stage a show at the Edinburgh Fringe about the unlikely tale behind Robert Burns: The Musical’s inspiration.
The comedy production, called Robert, Michael and Me, details Ms Tindall’s dealings with Michael Jackson in bringing the project to fruition.
She added: “It’s just about how this bizarre thing came to be, and the cast of the musical will appear towards the end.”
By popular demand, Rock Academy will stage two performances of Robert Burns: The Musical in Elgin this June.
But before then, trainees will showcase their fleet-footed skills in a show focusing on their stage technique, called Dance, Dance, Dance.
It will take place at Elgin Town Hall on Friday, May 13, at 7.30pm.
Schools and businesses looking to learn more about Rock Academy can attend an open day at their High Street base in Lossiemouth on Friday.
