A man has died following a crash in the highlands.
Police said the incident happened at about 7pm on the A9, northbound.
Officers said the male driver of a Ford Fiesta sustained serious injuries when his car was involved in a collision with a Nissan Qashqai.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The female driver of the Nissan was uninjured.
Road policing officers closed the road and inquiries at the scene are expected to continue for several hours.
Anyone who can assist with their investigation is asked to come forward.
Sergeant Donnie MacKinnon from the road policing unit said: “Tragically this collision has resulted in the driver of the Fiesta sustaining fatal injuries and we are currently trying to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident.
“Anyone who was on the A9 just outside Thurso at around 7pm on Thursday evening and witnessed what happened should contact police immediately.”
