A man who breached a non-harassment order by approaching his former partner and shouting at her in the middle of a Lerwick toy shop has been sent to jail for nearly four months.
Paul Stevens, of Lerwick’s Harbour Street, appeared from custody at the town’s Sheriff Court on Wednesday to hear sentencing after previously admitting breaching the order at Harry’s Department Store on 29 April.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told the court that the complainer was walking along Lerwick’s Commercial Street with her daughter when she caught sight of 45 year old Stevens walking nearby.
She went into Harry’s and was followed by the man – who had only recently been released from prison on a home detention curfew – into the toy section.
He asked to see his children and not wanting Stevens to get angry in public, she said yes – but the man from Lerwick began shouting and issuing threats before leaving the shop, leaving staff concerned.
“He continues to blame other people for his predicament” of not being able to see his children, Mackenzie said, with the woman left in “fear” of him.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client’s “main concern” was to see his daughter and that he was low after being told he had lost his job.
Sheriff Philip Mann told Stevens that “for whatever reason…you have absolutely no regard for the authority of court orders” and placed him in jail for a total of 14 weeks.
