Two roads in Aberdeen are to remain sealed off, amid safety concerns surrounding a fire-ravaged hotel.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service says the Britannia Hotel in Bucksburn is still unstable after a ferocious blaze tore through the building on Thursday, June 9.

Motorists had hoped that Oldmeldrum Road and Malcolm Road would be reopened soon, but in light of continuing worries about the fragile structure, they will be closed until next Friday.

An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said: “Oldmeldrum Road and Malcolm Road are both to be closed for a further week for further investigations, and a decision will be made after then.

“The priority is ensuring the building is made stable.”

Last week, fire chiefs said they believed there were no suspicious circumstances behind the fire, which devastated the well-known hotel.

Witnesses told of how the conflagration escalated from smoke to flames within minutes and how, shortly afterwards, plumes of thick smoke could be seen coming out of the site on Malcolm Road.

The fire service sent 11 units to the scene and 90 firefighters spent most of the night tackling the blaze, which destroyed the Village Pub and ripped through the buildings at the back of the site.

There were around 200 residents in the hotel at the time, many of whom were construction workers involved in nearby projects, who were forced to evacuate the building.
